When it comes to home remodelling, getting a brand new roof can be one of the more expensive jobs you can undertake. So, it is no surprise that everyone wants to make sure they are doing the job in the best possible way to ensure that the job does not have to be repeated anytime soon.

With the direct relationship between the quality of the materials and their expense, a lot of homeowners look to strike the balance between roofing materials that will last a long time, without exploding the price of the job. However, paying a little more upfront can end up saving you a lot of money down the road when it comes to a roof. This is because quality and longevity are married with these materials.

Here is a look at some of the most common building materials when it comes to getting the most longevity and durability out of your roof:

Asphalt Roll Roof

This material is made of large rolls of the material that your typical asphalt shingles are made of. While not the best solution for a home roof, this material is great for garages, sheds and porches. The average lifespan for this material is usually 5-10 years.

Built-Up Roofing (BUR)

Built by layering a waterproof material such as fibreglass with bitumen (hot tar), this is best for flat roofs. A BUR roof is inexpensive and has a lifespan of 20-30 years.

Composite Asphalt Shingle Roof

This is one of the most popular roofing options in the United States and can be found on more than 80 percent of homes around the nation. The reason it is so popular is that it comes with a relatively low cost and can have a life expectancy as long as 50 years if used in the proper environment.
