Grease is always found in our kitchens. Almost every type of cooking involves grease and this should make us look at our grease traps once in a while. Grease trap cleaning is very important especially if you own a restaurant, but somehow, it gets neglect amidst all the activities that are done in the kitchen. If you want a truly successful restaurant business, then it is important for your grease trap to be cleaned regularly. You will know why grease traps should be cleaned regularly if you read the discussion below.
Before reaching the normal drainage system, grease is captured by the grease trap. Fats and oils do not drain properly in a liquid drainage system because of its consistency. if you don’t clean your grease traps regularly then you will soon find that the fats and oils are overflowing and entering the standard drain. You will encounter more problems with an overflowing grease trap.
Your drains can clog if you don’t clean your grease traps. With a clogged drain, your kitchen sink is rendered useless until something is done to clear up the clog. A restaurant business will slow down with a clogged drain, since your personal are not able to use the sink to clean utensil and other kitchen stuff. Plumbers will spend days unclogging the drains since fats and oils are difficult to clean out from a pipe.
An un-maintained grease trap can let these oils and fats enter the sewage system, public septic tanks and other waste disposal systems, and if these systems get clogged, then you have a major problem in your hands. If the septic tank backs up, then human waste can bubble up the surface. Unpleasant odors can come out of the drains and it can also cause major damage to the ground where the tank is buried.
Sometimes kitchen fires are caused by un-maintained grease traps. Burning grease is very hot and is difficult to put out. Pouring water on the flame is not a solution since the flame can spread further throughout the kitchen, which you will not longer be able to contain. If you are only using a small amount of oil, then these types of fires can easily be avoided. However, the bad thing about an unclean grease trap is that the oil and fats can spread to places where you don’t check. You kitchen can suddenly burst in flames if you leave your stovetop burner unattended or if you grill gets too hot.
If the fire is a large one, you can either contain the fire quickly with a chemical fire extinguishers, or if you cannot, then a safe plan is to evacuate immediately and call the fire department.
